Your printer cartridge is all used up and you’re not sure what to do with it now. It might seem like the simple choice to just throw it away—but throwing away your printer cartridges creates larger landfills. A more environmentally friendly alternative would be to recycle them.
Thought recycling was only for paper, plastic, and glass? Didn’t realize you could recycle printer cartridges? Indeed you can! And recycling printer cartridges is a great way to save animals, reduce the emission of dangerous greenhouse gases, and prevent the spread of toxic chemicals that harm both humans and animals. For this very reason, Qualpath has an excellent printer-cartridge recycling program that is easy for you to use.
How does our printer cartridge recycling program work? The printer cartridges are first picked up from the drop-off location and brought to a special recycling plant where they are hand-sorted into piles depending on their type and make. Once they are sorted, they are broken down generally using a machine that separates each usable element from the cartridge ready to be recycled. Once they’ve been sorted and separated, they can then be sent off to be processed or can be processed in house. Then they are ready to be made into something new.
All of the plastic parts of the old cartridge will be sent to a processing plant where they will be melted and can be used for any number of products—not just new ink cartridges. Same with the metal parts. The remaining toner is often used in a paving product called TonerPave. The remaining parts are processed together and used to create something called eWood—a synthetic timber that can be used as an alternative to natural wood.
